It
began on a whim for Miranda Melville, a way to get points for her
high school track team at events, but she quickly learned to love the
little known sport of race walking.
She was disqualified in her first high school race for breaking form
but since then, there's been no stopping the 19 year old graduate of
Rush-Henrietta.
She just finished her freshman year at Wisconsin Parkside. She was
the top American female at the Junior World Cup in Russia in May and
she won the USA Track Junior National Title last month.
I practice every day, seven days a week. No matter how I feel
I know I have to show the discipline to get out there and do my
workout."
Miranda race walks anywhere from three to 12 miles a day. When she turns 20, she'll graduate up to 20 kilometer races.
Four years from now, Melville is hoping to be selected for the
Olympic Trials for the 2012 Summer Games. Race walking in the
Olympics is contested at 20km and 50km for both men and women.
